Talk Training offer Training and Learning for all in the Community.

We are a non-profit, charity working together with Teignmouth Community Association who are based at The Meadow Centre, Kingsway, Teignmouth.

The ethos of Talk Training is to be able to offer Training to a broad range of the community – we specialise in helping people to gain qualifications in order to gain paid employment and thus boosting their household income.

Many of our students have had bad learning experiences within their education and are therefore loathe to return to a ‘school’ setting, but here at Talk Training we manage to tailor make most of our courses to encourage informal learning in a relaxed and friendly environment. Learning impacts on peoples self confidence and can raise levels of self assurance and give a huge sense of achievement.

Many single parents attend our NVQ2 and 3 in Children’s Care Learning and Development and NVQ level 2 and 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. In order to ensure that our learning is accessible to everyone we offer crèche facilities along side most of our courses. This enables those at home with young children to attend classes, relaxed in the knowledge that their children are being well cared for in our Ofsted inspected Crèche setting with our experienced and qualified staff.

New to Talk Training this year was the Level 2 in Hairdressing which has proved to be enormously successful, mainly with students who have taken this opportunity for a change in career once their children are old enough to be more independent. This course has been running at the new Hairdressing salon at Teignmouth Community College two evenings a week. We are happy to continue offering this in September 2009.

We work with the Job Centre who refer their clients to come along to an informal Job Club on a Thursday Morning where they can have access to the internet via our laptops, have assistance in applying for vacant positions and also get help in ensuring that clients has an up to date CV. They also have access to photocopying, stationary and up to date relevant newspapers for job searching.

Our courses are varied and we keep costs to the minimum in order to be able to include those on lower incomes or benefits.

We offer many craft courses – jewellery making, enamelling, silk painting, felt making, an accredited course in Creative Crafts and Level 1 and 2 in photography.

Our commitment to health means that we offer healthy eating courses, cookery on a budget and fitness – Keep fit 3 times per week, Yoga and T’ai Chi. We work very closely with the Healthy Hearts and Minds project, also run by Teignmouth Community Association.

We aim, wherever possible to work with local businesses and be able to offer the essential courses that all employers require of their staff: First Aid, Health and Safety, Food Safety, Risk Assessment, Stress Awareness, Manual Handling and COSHH. We also offer these to individuals to help them to become more employable.

Talk Training are successful as we are able to ‘think outside the box’, with a flexible approach, do not discriminate against anyone and work in true partnership with a variety of local organisations.
